Portolan is both international and internationalist. it is international in the sense of including authors and addressing political problems from a wide range of national and regional contexts, with special attention to political problems and movements that are relatively unfamiliar to English-language readers. It is internationalist insofar as it highlights correspondences among political situations and solidarities among movements across national, regional, and global borders. Today, new forms and understandings of internationalism need to be invented, and Portolan will be attentive to ways in which they are emerging.
Portolan and South Atlantic Quarterly, although independent publications, share theoretical commitments and are designed to complement one another. Whereas SAQ, published by Duke University Press, maintains an academic profile, Portolan provides a more rapid mode of publication to keep up with current events.
